A Room for a Torn Painter

The video installation was created in 2024 for the Pforzheim Gallery as part of the exhibition <10 about women artists in the municipal collection. For "Frauenzimmer", Veronika Dräxler chose the painter Mely Joseph, born in Pforzheim, as a reference point: a conflicted personality who died by suicide in Berlin in 1920. Born 100 years before Dräxler, the two share not only their birth year but also life paths through cities like Munich, Karlsruhe, Berlin, and Paris. Joseph’s work “Rheinlandschaft” is characterized by an unusual color palette that seems to verge on madness, engaging in a dialogue with Expressionists like Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, and Wassily Kandinsky. The video portrays performative rituals, centered on the removal of ivy from the Joseph family grave in Pforzheim to reveal the memorial plaque for the artist. Additional acts revolve around spirals of cleansing and (re)contamination, enacted within the installation itself.
